Andre LaCombe, A Short Biography

Andre LaCombe was born in St. Vallier, Bellechase, Quebec and baptized on 31 May 1785 at St. Thomas, Montmagny per PRDH record 425987 (PRDH - Programme de recherche en démographie historique).

"Located on a hillside overlooking the Saint Lawrence River, some 40 kilometres away from the Quebec City bridge and its smaller neighbor St-Michel-de-Bellechasse, Saint-Vallier is a charming village in the shade that has preserved its tranquility and old-world charm."

Andre worked as a farmer in lower Canada.

Andre's parents were Joseph Marie Balan Lacombe and Marie Josephte Carbonneau who had married on 11 Feb 1765 at Berthier-en-Bas, Quebec.
On 10 January 1809, at the age of 23, Andre LaCombe married at St-Francois, Beauce, Canada.  Andre Lacombe son of Joseph Lacombe, farmer, and Josephte Carbonneau, married Marie-Louise Gagne
(as it is written in the marriage act) on 10 January 1809 in St-Francois de Beauce. As witnesses to their marriage: "Joseph and Charles Lacombe, brothers of the husband, Joseph Gautron and Joseph Nadeau, brothers-in-law of Jean-Marie Gagne, taking the place as Marie-Louise's father, Pierre Boucher and Jean Grondin".

Unusual to French Canadian record keeping, Marie-Louise Gagne's parents were omitted.  As this couple baptized their children, Marie Louise Gagne's name was listed once, then either omitted altogether, or listed as Josephte with no name, or as Josette Roy, or as Josette Quirion, or as Josette Gagne.  It has been impossible to trace her branch of the family tree any further.  I have done some research on the marriage witnesses and Jean-Marie Gagne, which will appear in later posts.

I am hoping by publishing this information, more information will be shared about Andre Lacombe and his mysterious bride.

Andre Lacombe’s sister Marie-Marguerite married Francois Roy 1807 St. Vallier. His brother Francois, a navigator,  married a Marie-Josette Roy (b 4 Oct 1770 St. Vallier) in 1797.  Therefore, there were a Roy connections with this family already.  Francois died in 1799.

Members of his family relocated with him to Waterville in the 1830's.

Andre's name is found in Waterville as Andrew Lacomb.  Also, sexton records have Andrew Lackum died at age 78. 1850 Census has Andrew's age as 60 and name Andrew Lacome.

Robert Chenard, a Waterville genealogist who is noted for his research on French-Canadian settlers in Maine published the following information on his website about this family:

*Sophie died 5 May 1904 in Waterville.
NOTE 1: married as M.-Louise Gagné
NOTE 2: Records of St.Francois de Beauce seem to have five (5) different Andre Lacombe families.  It is my opinion that all these are a single family.
They are listed as follows in that volume:
(1)Andre Lacombe & M.-Louise Gagné: child Frédéric b. 10-3-1810
(2)Andre Lacombe & Josephte _____ : children Francois-Geo. 1811, Edouard 1826, Cyrille b. 1834
(3)Andre Lacombe & Josette Roy: child Adélaide b. 6-4-1815
(4)Andre Lacombe & Josette Quirion: children Joseph b. 12-5-1817, Sophie b. 1819, Francois. b. 1822-d. 1825,
Féréol b. 14-1-1824, Zoé b. 21-8-1829, Charles b. 1832
(5)Andre Lacombe & Josette Gagné: Luce d. 1814
This family was evidently in Skowhegan about 1836-8 and in Waterville afterwards.

Andre worked as a laborer in the Waterville, Maine area.

Andre's wife died in Waterville, Kennebec County, Maine around 1850.  Andre Lacombe died in Waterville, Kennebec County, Maine at the age of 78 on 16 September 1863.
